Welcome to my blog! My name is Jeniece St. Romain, and I am an Attorney-At-Law, and International Trade Law Consultant. As a woman in trade from a small island developing state, I am passionate about trade facilitation, international trade finance and investment, and the intersection of sustainable development, gender and the environment all within the scope of trade.
My academic background includes an LL.M in Legislative Drafting and an LL.M with Distinction in International Trade Law, and my main research interests span the fields of trade, social protection, food security, in the context of sustainable economic growth. As someone who has gained valuable experience working in the public, private, and international sectors, ranging from the Antigua and Barbuda Ministry of Legal Affairs to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), I understand that the complexities of trade law can be challenging, and I anticipate that my opinions, explanations, and humor across topics ranging from trade liberalisation, to regional trade agreements can help others navigating the trade winds of law and policy and provide readers with practical and useful information.
Historically, much of the discourse and information about various topics, including trade and trade law, has been dominated by voices from the global north. It is my hope that existence of this blog, written by someone from the global south, helps to bridge the information gap and facilitates the sharing of knowledge, experiences, and best practices that may be specific to the global south. At the core of my personal mandate for this blog are contributing to a more comprehensive and balanced understanding of trade and trade law, amplifying diverse voices, and facilitating meaningful discussions that can lead to positive change in the global trading system, as I believe this type of exchange of information is crucial for fostering international cooperation, promoting a more inclusive global dialogue, and working towards equitable and sustainable trade practices.
Whether you are a law student just beginning to explore the field of international trade law, or an experienced professional looking to stay up-to-date on the latest industry trends, build community, and/or dialogue with me on topics of mutual interest, I hope that this blog will be a valuable resource for you!
